File formats

All file formats listed below are identified by the file extensions and can be used as a reference when creating your web pages.


AVI

Audio Video Interleaved. Use with the Windows Media Player to display movie files.


CGI
Common Gateway Interface. This format is used for scripts that provide server side search and retrieval capabilities.


CSS

Cascading Style Sheet is a plain text file format used for formatting content within web pages.


DOC

A DOC file extension is a text or binary file format used for Word processing documents created by Microsoft Word.


EML
This extension is assigned to Outlook Express files when saving emails.


GIF
Graphics Interchange Format is a highly compressed file format used for fast uploading and downloading of image files.


HTML
Hypertext Markup Language file format used in browsers such as Internet Explorer to display web pages


IMG
This type of file format was originally designed to work with the GEM Paint Program.


INI
This file extension is used by application software that contains information on environment settings.


JPG

Stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group. JPG images are in 24 bit graphic file format and have compression ratios between 5:1 and 15:1.


MID
Musical Instrument Digital Interface. This file format is used by musical software and hardware devices to store song information.


MOV
This is a QuickTime movie file format. QuickTime movies can be viewed on both Windows and Macintosh computers.


MPG
This file format is used for running QuickTime multimedia audio streams over the Internet.


MP3

This format uses a compression algorithm to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent audio recordings.


OGG

A free open container audio file format created under unrestricted software patents.


PDF
Portable Document Format used by Adobe Acrobat reader to display formatted text document files.


RTF
Rich Text Format. This file extension is used by Microsoft Word to format text and graphics for easy transfer between applications.


TXT
A plain text file format used with editors such as Microsoft Word or Wordpad to produce document files.


WAV

This is a Microsoft file format standard for storing audio bitstream files on PCs computers.


WEB
This is a program file used with Camillo editor. All files saved from within the Camillo editor editor have a .web file extension.


WPG
WordPerfect graphic file format that can contain bitmaps or vector graphics.


ZIP
A common DOS and Windows compression file format used in Pkzip or Winzip to view and extract archives.
